Mission Statement of the University Writing Center:
“In a writing center the object is to make sure that writers, and not necessarily their texts, are what get changed by instruction. In axiom form, it goes like this: our job is to produce better writers, not [necessarily] better writing.” (Stephen North’s “The Idea of the Writing Center”)
The University Writing Center’s writing consultants/peer tutors offer an array of expertise and writing support in one-on-one and group settings to all writers on any project at any stage of the writing process. Through collaborative engagement between writers, ideas, and texts, we support writers in their growth and development by connecting them with resources and teaching them techniques and strategies for improving and honing their writing.
The University Writing Center also seeks to support faculty and classrooms in best practices for teaching and learning writing through workshops and in-classroom support designed to meet the specific needs of every individual. In the fast-paced environment of the University setting, students may at times focus much on “getting through” a given writing task as opposed to being actively engaged and present in the writing task.
Our goal is to guide students throughout the process of crafting their own writing identities so that they may take these skills learned in the Writing Center (or rhetorical situation) across contexts. The goal: to produce a writer who can engage in transfer-oriented thinking, which ultimately leads to the longitudinal success of each and every student writer. The University Writing Center aims to help students think critically about what you know about writing and how one is drawing upon that knowledge when engaging in the writing process.
