English Education at Â鶹´«Ã½ is a rigorous program that results in secondary education certification. Accredited by CAEP, a national teaching professions organization that ensures high-quality programs for teacher preparation, our program is both competitive and comprehensive. Curriculum

English Education majors at Â鶹´«Ã½ who intend to pursue certification in secondary education combine courses in both English and Education to fulfill South Carolina State certification requirements. In addition to English courses like Advanced Composition, Adolescent Literature, The Development of Modern English, Modern Grammar, Shakespeare, Major Black Writers and Literary Criticism, you'll study teaching methods and content courses in our School of Education. To successfully complete this program, students.need to achieve acceptable scores on Praxis Core and Praxis II standardized tests.

Student Opportunities and Experience

English Education majors have to complete approximately 100 pre-clinical hours of observation in high schools. In your final semester, you'll be placed in a high school as a teacher candidate to complete one semester of student teaching. All required coursework has to be completed prior to student teaching.

Careers and Outcomes

Every year, the public school districts in South Carolina advertise job openings for high school English teachers, and career prospects are excellent. Some school districts offer sign-up bonuses. School districts in South Carolina provide support for teachers who seek to earn graduate degrees. Our program graduates receive job offers almost as soon as they complete graduation requirements!

Admissions Requirements

English Education majors need to meet the requirements of the School of Education to be accepted as teacher candidates. Your English department adviser will work with you to make sure you are on track with your major. Please visit the English department chair to discuss this program.
