The School of Education is home to several collaborative, grant funded and research-based programs that contribute highly to the local and broader educational community.

AmeriCorps/Â鶹´«Ã½ Saturday Academy

Â鶹´«Ã½ Saturday Academy is an AmeriCorps program operating through the School of Education at Â鶹´«Ã½ University. The goal of Â鶹´«Ã½ Saturday Academy is to engage volunteers as tutors to improve student achievement in reading and writing at the middle school level. The Academy offers supplemental group instruction and individual tutoring by qualified and trained AmeriCorps members in reading and writing to middle school students. Each volunteer selected will be trained to tutor students as set forth by the guidelines of the program. Volunteers are comprised primarily of college level students but any qualified individual may apply.

Unlike many tutoring programs that focus on subject matter, Â鶹´«Ã½ Saturday Academy is designed to enhance students' reading and writing skills through interactive instruction and tutoring. Â鶹´«Ã½ Saturday Academy is held on Saturday mornings from 9:00a.m.-5:00p.m. at the Â鶹´«Ã½ University campus.

Â鶹´«Ã½ University Saturday Academy

CALL ME MISTER

Call Me MiSTER is a collaboration between Â鶹´«Ã½ University and Clemson University to recruit, train, and certify elementary teachers in the public schools of South Carolina. The mission of Call Me MiSTER (acronym for Mentors Instructing Students Toward Effective Role Models) Initiative is to increase the pool of available teachers from a broader more diverse background, particularly among the State’s lowest performing elementary schools. The Call Me MiSTER program is contributing to the talent pool of excellent teachers by identifying and supporting young men who are literally touching the future by teaching children. The program provides: book assistance, performance-based stipends, an academic support system to help ensure success, and a cohort system for social and cultural support to designated program participants according to student progress in the program. Applications are reviewed once per academic year on a competitive basis. Interested students must have declared elementary education or early childhood education as a major, demonstrated record of high scholastic achievement, community involvement, and extracurricular activities.

Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools

Â鶹´«Ã½ University, through its operation of the nationally tested Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools program, provides young children and their parents with enhanced academic and social enrichment experiences that will result in overall improved learning and greater civic/social engagement.

Responding to the Children’s Defense Fund mission of ensuring every child A Healthy Start, A Head Start, A Fair Start, A Safe Start, and A Moral Start in Life; the program at Â鶹´«Ã½ focuses on a trilogy of planned components that include:

  • An Integrated reading Curriculum (IRC)… Engaging scholars in intensive reading of selected books that promote critical and analytical thinking.
  • Decision Making Experiences… Engaging scholars in problem-solving activities that promote the desire and power to choose the “right path.”
  • Visionary Leadership Training…Engaging scholars in activities/experiences that promote creative and futuristic thinking.

These components are uniquely connected, as they respond to the very important needs of three special groups:  the scholars, young adults, and parents.

Beyond these connections, another critically needed goal is woven into this program that is sure to result in enhancing the way we view teaching and learning.  Teachers in training at Â鶹´«Ã½ and other institutions of higher education across the state will be invited to observe and participate in the program’s civic/scholarly/hands-on experiences.  Thus, the art of teaching and the science of improved classroom management skills will take place wherever these teachers go…propelling education to a new level in South Carolina and beyond.

This program will leave no child behind as it takes scholars, parents, young adults, and teacher interns to a new level of commitment in addressing the needs of our community/society.
