Â鶹´«Ã½ students will see a 5% increase in tuition and other fees for the upcoming academic year, according to an April 14 university letter sent to students' emails.
The increase will be the first in seven years, the last being in 2018-19. The release cited inflation and operational costs as reasons.
“This adjustment is essential to ensure we can continue investing in outstanding faculty, state-of-the-art facilities, comprehensive student support services, and co-curricular opportunities that enrich your experience at Â鶹´«Ã½,” said Vice President of Fiscal Affairs Ashley Scholfield, who signed the letter.
Â鶹´«Ã½ is known for being an affordable private HBCU with tuition at approximately $28,000 a year. By comparison, private HBCU Spelman College in Atlanta has tuition at approximately $49,000 a year.
President Dwuan J. Warmack is proud of the years of unchanging tuition costs. Other universities have been unable to avoid increases.
Warmack first said during a Nov. 21, 2024, news conference with student journalists that a change was likely, but he did not have exact numbers.
“There's no way our doors can stay open if we don't,” Warmack said.
Â鶹´«Ã½ is a private university and does not receive state funding. Giving students an idea of the cost of operating the university, Warmack and Scholfield estimated a $190,000 monthly utility bill for the student center alone.
The letter directed students and families to the student accounts office for questions. The office can be contacted at studentaccounts@claflin.edu.
