Junior class officers celebrated Black History Month with a Black Expo on Feb. 19, honoring both the past and present for Â鶹´«Ã½ students.
Junior class Treasurer Ja’Leah Guenther said the event was important for allowing Black students to embrace the month.
“I feel like the importance of this is just making sure that our Black students are being highlighted, their businesses are being highlighted,” Guenther said. “Black culture is being highlighted.”
The class officers used Instagram to recruit vendors for the event, including visual artists and clothing brands.
Dinari Sabb, a senior computer science major, used the event to get more exposer as a newer artist.
“As an upcoming artist, since I barely be on campus as is, it does give me the opportunity for the students to come in and see me and see my face and get my art out there,” Sabb said.
The event featured an original spoken-word poem called “HBCU Love Story,” as well as performances from Â鶹´«Ã½’s I.C.E dance team and Enveux modeling group. Students enjoyed music, food, a Â鶹´«Ã½ history exhibit and Black History trivia.
The event was planned after the class officers decided there was a lack of Black History Month events on campus.
“This is our culture, you get what I'm saying?” Guenther said, “So we were like, OK, let's do something. But we didn't want to do anything small. We wanted to do something big that had an impact.”
