Dr. Cletra Peters accepts a scholarship donation from the Delta Zeta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha.

The Delta Zeta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha donated $2,000 to Â鶹´«Ã½ University to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King.

The scholarship contribution was made Jan. 18 at the 36th annual MLK Unity Breakfast hosted by the Delta Zeta Lambda chapter. The event recognizes leaders who are committed to service in their communities and awards scholarships to local universities.

Â鶹´«Ã½ is “ecstatic to receive this donation,” said Dr. Cletra Peters, university vice president and chief of staff. “The money will be used to help support our students financially.”

Asked how important donations from fraternities and sororities are, she said, “As a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., it’s good for the students to see that our commitment to service is lifelong.

“The graduate chapter being able to pour into our students means the world because it prepares them for a lifelong service; it doesn’t just stop after college,” Peters said.

The Rev. Herman L. Prince was the keynote speaker for the event. He spoke on the topic of “What happens to a dream deferred.”

“Some lanes are not designed to take you where you’re trying to go … but when you get in the right lane, at least you have the possibility,” Prince said.

Community leaders Dr. And Mrs. Kevin and Clay Sandra Ray, and the Rev. Dr. Monnieque Singleton were presented the Martin Luther King Jr. Distinguished Service Award. Christopher Green was honored with the Alpha On The Move Award.
