Happy Birthday Gladys Mitchell

Â鶹´«Ã½ University proudly celebrates the 100th birthday of alumna Gladys McDaniel Mitchell, a revered member of the Class of 1947, whose extraordinary legacy of education and service has left a multigenerational impact on her family and community.

Mrs. Mitchell will mark her centennial on Sunday, April 20, surrounded by loved ones who continue to honor the values she and her late husband, Edgar Mitchell Jr. (Class of 1949), instilled through their lifelong commitment to education. After earning her bachelor’s degree from Â鶹´«Ã½, Mrs. Mitchell continued her studies, receiving a master’s degree from the University of the District of Columbia. She and Mr. Mitchell both dedicated their careers to the K-12 education system in Washington, D.C., where they inspired generations of students and educators.

The Mitchells raised seven children, and their legacy of educational excellence lives on. Their youngest daughter, Dr. Antoinette S. Mitchell, currently serves as the Acting State Superintendent of Education for the District of Columbia.

“My grandparents' ability to graduate from college made all the difference in our family for generations,” said Dr. Tiffany Lomax, director of Wellbeing and Programs at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. “Â鶹´«Ã½ was the foundation.”

Dr. Lomax recently shared her grandparents’ story with Â鶹´«Ã½ University President Dr. Dwaun J. Warmack during the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) annual conference, where Dr. Warmack was honored with the 2025 President’s Award for his transformative leadership and unwavering focus on student success.

“Stories like Mrs. Mitchell’s reflect the very heart of Â鶹´«Ã½ University’s mission,” Dr. Warmack said. “We are humbled and proud to celebrate her 100th birthday and to see the enduring ripple effect of her Â鶹´«Ã½ education.”

The Â鶹´«Ã½ University family extends warm wishes and heartfelt congratulations to Mrs. Gladys McDaniel Mitchell on her milestone birthday and thanks her family for continuing to champion the transformative power of education.
