Fall 2020 Commencement Update
Oct 30, 2020
Dear 2020 Graduates,
We had hoped that cases of COVID-19 infections would decrease to the extent that would allow the City of Orangeburg to lift its restriction on crowd gathering. Since cases in South Carolina have remained relatively high, the University is left with no alternative but to hold a virtual commencement ceremony at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 21, 2020.
However, we still remain hopeful that we will be able to celebrate with you in person and witness you safely walk across the ceremonial stage late Spring 2021.
The city’s ordinance, which is still in effect, clearly states that “no mass gatherings which would pose a threat to public health or could strain the public health, planning and response resources of the City.” The University will comply with the ordinance and when it is safe, we will celebrate your achievement in the safest manner possible.
From another perspective, the nation is currently experiencing an increased spread of the virus and we understand the importance of safely celebrating this milestone with our students. We will continue to monitor the local and statewide COVID-19 numbers over the next few months as we prepare to welcome graduates and guests to the campus for the Spring 2021 semester.
Once again, we wanted to hold an in-person celebration for you and your family in our traditional way. We are looking forward to safely doing so when circumstances will enable us to do so.
Sincerely,
The Commencement Committee
Dr. Verlie Tisdale, Chair
Mr. Drexel B. Ball, Co-Chair
