Â鶹´«Ã½ University Hosts Earth Day Event

Â鶹´«Ã½ University’s environmental organization,” Friends of the Earth,” along with the Orangeburg Chamber of Commerce will be celebrating Earth Day on Saturday, April 22, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Memorial Plaza in Downtown Orangeburg. The theme for this year’s Earth Day activities is “Stand Up! Join In! Take Action!”
Celebrated annually worldwide, Earth Day is held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day events are now held in more than 193 countries is coordinated by the Earth Day Network. “At Â鶹´«Ã½ University we are committed to helping our campus and local community understand the importance of preserving the Earth and how we can take an active part in doing so,” said Rodney Hudson, director of auxiliary services and the chair of Â鶹´«Ã½ University’s Sustainability Committee. Last year, Â鶹´«Ã½ University was recognized in Princeton Review’s Guide to 361 Green Colleges. Profiles in the guidebook include information on a school’s use of renewable energy, recycling and conservation programs to the availability of environmental studies, and career guidance for green jobs. According to Princeton Review, 2,000 schools were invited to participate, and out of the responses, 361 schools were profiled.
Several local vendors be on hand including Department of Public Utilities, Keep Orangeburg Beautiful, Palmetto Pride, Friends of Edisto, and the Tobacco Free Alliance, just to name a few. The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Camelia M. Kantor, assistant professor of biology at Â鶹´«Ã½ University, who will speak about environment and climate literacy. A special proclamation will also be given by Michael C. Butler, mayor of Orangeburg.
