Hillary Clinton Discusses Increasing Jobs and Support For HBCUs During Town Hall Meeting At Â鶹´«Ã½ University
Nov 08, 2015
Hillary Clinton participated in a town hall meeting at Â鶹´«Ã½ University Saturday (Nov.7) that gave the Democratic presidential candidate an opportunity to discuss a myriad of topics including jobs and the economy and support for historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
A capacity crowd of more than 200 students, faculty, area residents and news media packed Ministers' Hall to see Clinton, who delivered the keynote address at Â鶹´«Ã½'s 2007 commencement convocation.
Roland Martin of TV One’s News One Now was the event's moderator.
"President Obama inherited the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression," said Clinton. "His leadership, with the assistance of so many other Americans,
has reduced unemployment. He has not received enough credit for what he's done.
The nation has been on a slow but steady path to recovery but incomes are not rising. We need everyone's income to rise and to do this, we need a very big infrastructure program to improve roads, tunnels, airports, bridges, and rail systems that will put millions of people to work."
Clinton said that providing additional assistance to small and women-owned businesses will be one of her priorities if elected president.
"I will be an advocate for small businesses," added Clinton. "We should be the world's energy super power and combat climate change by creating jobs to improve energy efficiency. This will enable growth for the economy and I will make sure that small businesses, minority and women - owned businesses will receive contracts for work to achieve our goals."
Clinton received her loudest applause when she revealed her plan to restructure college tuition and support students attending historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
"If you attend a public college or university you will not have to borrow money to pay tuition," Clinton said. "If you qualify for the Pell Grant, you will be able to use the Pell Grant for living expenses. We will make it possible for far more young people to attend and finish college. This will also apply to HBCUs. I will invest $25 billion into HBCUs including private universities like Â鶹´«Ã½. These are the places that graduate black professionals and we need more of you."
