Â鶹´«Ã½ Looks to Increase Awareness and Enrollment Through Partnership with Midlands Technical College

Apr 27, 2015

Â鶹´«Ã½ University is looking forward to welcoming students from Midlands Technical College (MTC), the result of an articulation agreement between the two institutions of higher education. Under the agreement, MTC students will be able to transfer specified courses for credit toward their degrees at Â鶹´«Ã½.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for both Â鶹´«Ã½ University and the students at Midlands Technical College,” said Dr. Henry N. Tisdale, president of Â鶹´«Ã½ University. “We recognize and respect the preparedness of the students who complete the associate degree programs at Midlands Tech and we anticipate welcoming many of their graduates to Â鶹´«Ã½.”

The agreement was signed by the president of both institutions in December 2014 and the expectation is that students will begin to transfer for Â鶹´«Ã½’s summer sessions. Students may also take advantage of Â鶹´«Ã½’s online degree programs.

Midlands Technical College is a comprehensive, multi-campus, and public, two-year college serving the primary region of Richland, Lexington and Fairfield counties of South Carolina.      Midlands Technical College, which has an enrollment of more than 12,000 students, has six campuses:  Airport Campus (West Columbia); Beltline Campus (downtown Columbia); Fairfield Campus  (Winnsboro); Harbison Campus (Irmo); Northeast Campus (Columbia); Batesburg-Leesville Campus (Batesburg-Leesville, S.C.); and Fort Jackson Army Higher Education Center.

“We are actively and aggressively recruiting on Midlands Tech’s campuses,” said Dr. Cindye Richburg, executive director of the Â鶹´«Ã½ University Professional and Continuing Studies Program.  “The partnership began with the 2015 Spring semester so it is in the infancy stage.  However, most of the students are submitting applications for the upcoming summer and fall semesters.  We know that Â鶹´«Ã½’s pool of applicants from Midlands will greatly increase as a result of this partnership.”

Midlands Technical College has more than 120 degree, diploma and certificate programs. The college currently provides a variety of educational opportunities that support its mission of human resource development in support of economic growth in its service region. Midlands Tech is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

“I am excited about the potential growth the partnership provides – particularly at the Columbia and Fort Jackson sites,” said Dr. Kevin E. James, associate executive director of Professional and Continuing Studies Program. “Midlands Tech students in the Columbia area can take classes to complete their bachelor’s degree without driving to Orangeburg.”
