Â鶹´«Ã½ University to Begin Online Courses Summer 2014
Dec 05, 2013
Â鶹´«Ã½ University will launch online courses in summer 2014, and three degree programs will go fully online in the fall, giving students the opportunity to receive the unique Â鶹´«Ã½ academic experience from anywhere, at any time.
Â鶹´«Ã½ University Provost Dr. Karl S. Wright said the online courses are in response to the demand from current students.
“Entering the online education space is consistent with our mission of being a student-oriented institution,” he said. “Beginning this summer, our students will have the flexibility of staying at home, studying abroad or working on an internship while taking courses by Â鶹´«Ã½ professors.”
The 35 online summer courses, ranging from freshman English to an introduction to forensic science, are the culmination of years of planning and work by the University to move into the online learning arena, said Dr. Anisah Bagasra, co-chair of Â鶹´«Ã½’s Distance Education Committee and assistant professor of psychology at the University.
The online effort’s initial focus is on general courses, Â鶹´«Ã½’s MBA program, and two degrees – criminal justice and organizational management – through the University’s Center for Professional and Continuing Studies.
“The support of faculty for these new initiatives has been positive, providing invaluable feedback,” Bagasra said. “Online courses will allow Â鶹´«Ã½ to reach students who may be unable to attend physical classes due to family, work, military or other obligations, and those who reside outside of the Orangeburg area. Distance education allows Â鶹´«Ã½ University to continue, in a different form, the mission to provide students with access and success.”
“Our hope is that offering online programs in the summer will assist students in fulfilling their graduation requirements in a timely manner,” Wright said.
